A Rich Southern History

Port Wentworth was founded in 1733 by European colonists. There is some disagreement as to who the town was named after. Some believe it is named for Lady Henrietta Maria Wentworth of England. Others believe it was named for G.W. Wentworth who was president of the town's first large industry, the Great Eastern Lumber Company. The town of Port Wentworth was incorporated in 1957 and is proud to call itself the home of the cotton gin.

Rice and cotton plantations made up most of the industry in Port Wentworth for much of its history. This area was once home to the Mulberry Grove Plantation, one of the largest and most successful plantations in Georgia. Not only did this plantation belong to Major General Nathanael Greene, who was given the plantation as a reward for his service to George Washington, it was also the residence of Eli Whitney when he invented the cotton gin.

The Culture of the South

Port Wentworth is full of fascinating history and culture. The city is currently developing two new museums that will provide visitors a glimpse into the fascinating history of the region. Locals and tourists alike can explore the history of the south by learning more about Eli Whitney and his revolutionary invention, the cotton gin, at the upcoming Eli Whitney Museum. Another project in the works is the Savannah River Plantations Museum, to showcase the fascinating story of southern plantations.

Anther bit of southern culture can be found in the church and historic praise houses of Port Wentworth. These were once a place for slaves from the various plantations to gather for prayer and to sing hymns of deliverance. The citizens or Port Wentworth are proud of the great history these locations have to offer.

Many are working to rebuild and preserve these historical sites for visitors to come and learn the rich history of the south. Some historical churches in Port Wentworth include Richmond Baptist Church, North Salem Baptist Church, Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Our Lady of Lourdes Church and White Oak Baptist Church.
