Eating a healthy diet needs to be a primary concern for aging adults because the body undergoes some significant changes as it ages. For most people, the only way to combat those changes is through daily exercise and eating right. For instance, the body's metabolism naturally slows the older we get so eating less fat becomes more important. The body's digestive system also changes and it becomes harder for the body to absorb certain nutrients like folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12.

To help you get the most out of your diet, here are some dietary tips for seniors.

Tips for Eating Right

  • Eat plenty of seasonal fruits and vegetables of various colors. Colorful fruits and veggies are rich in antioxidants and the fiber in the fruit can help prevent constipation.
  • Use olive oil over other cooking oils because it can help prevent high cholesterol and it improves the good cholesterol in the blood.
  • Try eating six to seven smaller meals throughout the day to help prevent fatigue. This will also help ease digestion and aid in nutritional absorption.
  • Take a healthy snack with you when heading out to help avoid the temptation of eating out.
  • Avoid processed foods and foods that contain high amounts of sugars, fats, or salt.
  • Drink 15 glasses of water a day to help prevent dehydration, constipation, and loss of muscle density.
  • Avoid overcooking most foods as overcooking destroys vital nutrients.
  • Include a moderate amount of protein in each meal (meat, fish, eggs, beans, lentils or cheese).
  • Include one or two servings of fruits or vegetables with each meal.
  • Make sure you are getting enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet to help maximize bone health and density.
  • Eat foods, such as cereals, that are fortified with vitamin B12 or take a supplement to ensure you are getting enough of the vitamin.
  • Eat healthy fats, like those found in nuts, avocado, fatty fish, and seeds while avoiding trans fats and saturated fats.
  • Eating raw fruits and vegetables will help provide the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and nutrients you need for healthy aging. These foods, when eaten uncooked, will also help you maintain a healthy weight and reduce your risk of heart problems.
