Things to See and Do in Jekyll Island, Ga.

Despite it being an island, Jekyll Island has a paved causeway that allows one to access it by car. It's a deeply historic area, complete with its own 250-acre Historic District, and it features 10 miles of beaches with hard-packed sand that are perfect for walking or biking along the surf.

Largely rustic, Jekyll Island is a great place to enjoy a scenic picnic. In fact, there are several picnic areas along the northern and southern ends of the island. The Clam Creek Picnic Area is a popular spot in the north, while the St. Andrews Picnic Area in the south offers a wonderful setting where one can enjoy a lunch on the beach whilst watching dolphins break the surface for gulps of air.

Near the middle of the island the Jekyll Island Historic District can be found. Most of the buildings here are remnants from the Jekyll Island Club era, including the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. The hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a wonder to behold.

Jekyll Island's primary visitor's attraction is its simplistic beauty. The island is so stunning that it has served as a filming location for several Hollywood movies, including "X-Men: First Class", "Glory", "The Legend of Bagger Vance" and others. If you're planning on visiting this piece of history, be sure to bring your camera.

While much of the island may still resemble a tropical paradise, surprisingly it features four beautiful golf courses, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and the Summer Waves Water Park. This island offers plenty of diversity. Here, you can rent a cottage, take in a concert, rent a boat, enjoy a game of tennis, spend the day shopping, or enjoy a seafood feast. Jekyll Island might not be the largest island in the world, but the possibilities for fun are endless.
