History of Richmond Hill, Georgia

Once inhabited by the Guale people, the area that now makes up Richmond Hill was eventually settled by the English in 1792. The region became very popular as a standout for rice plantations until the Civil War brought production to a halt. In 1862, Fort McAllister was built here to protect Savannah's "back door" and it played a major role in the famous March to the Sea battle. After the Civil War, the area became known as Ways Station and it dealt with its own challenges until Henry Ford and his wife came to the area looking for a winter retreat. Ford built his winter retreat on Sterling Bluff and over the next 22 years, he dedicated himself to turn the area's fortunes around. An amazing rags-to-riches story, Richmond Hill today still features historic resources that are associated with the Henry Ford era and it has been recognized and awarded as a Preserve America Community for preserving American heritage by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
