Low Impact Sports for Seniors

As more seniors are retiring, senior living communities in Savannah are providing more activities for seniors to gain health benefits and to feel a part of a team. There are plenty of activities that seniors can do that are low impact and still fun.

Bocce Ball

The physical aspects of bocce ball can be made easier with the use of ramps or adapters so everyone can enjoy it. There is also a mental aspect of bocce ball that many seniors enjoy as they learn more about the game and ways to strategize to get points. It can be played as a team, so there is a great social aspect to it. Marshes of Skidaway Island offers bocce ball every Sunday at the Cottages Park.

Shuffleboard

The game can be played indoors or outdoors, making it a great choice for Savannah senior living communities. Basic rules can be learned in just a few minutes, making it a great choice for seniors. Like bocce ball, shuffleboard provides low impact exercise as well as a mental aspect. Seniors can learn strategies and continued improvement of the game for an even greater challenge.

Ping Pong

Ping Pong has some movement, but it’s a no-contact activity so there is not a huge risk for injury. Seniors can play one on one or join up and form teams, giving it a good social aspect.

Pickleball

Pickleball is a mixture of badminton, ping pong and tennis and can be enjoyed by people of all ages, especially seniors. It’s low impact and the team aspect helps seniors form friendships. Any tennis court or badminton court can be modified for the game and the only equipment that is needed is a paddle and a ball. The ball is similar to a whiffle ball and there are different versions for indoor and outdoor play. There are also many different types of paddles for every skill level.
